Operation Encompass Training

9th December 2017

Mrs Lorraine Faulkner

Head of Care and Estates

Mrs Helen Campbell

Head of School

Lorraine and I attended Operation Encompass training and as a result we are now part of these scheme. Being part of Operation Encompass means that before the start of the school day any of the Designated Safeguarding Leads will be contacted by the Police if they have been called out to any of our families for an incident of domestic abuse. As a result we will be able to respond to the needs of the child quickly; whether it is something relatively simple like them arriving in play clothes rather than school uniform or something more complex like there is an uncharacteristic change in their behaviour. We will not need to ask the child questions which they may find challenging and we will be able to receive the parents without making a difficult situation worse. The support that we give will be tailored to meet the needs of the child and the circumstances. We can support families and work to minimise the impact that this could have on the child’s education. All the staff understand that the information is confidential and will be treated in the same way as any other child protection information.

It is very sobering to thought that in one year (2015 – 2016) the police recorded 1.03 million cases of domestic abuse in the UK.
