A great year for reading at Pencalenick!

This year has been outstanding for reading at Pencalenick and a number of activities have taken place to enhance pupils’ appreciation of books.

Two Y11 girls and one Y10 boy have given up a lunch activity session each week to listen and help Y7 pupils with their reading.

As well as numerous reading interventions taking place all pupils have been regularly reading in their tutor groups, this has resulted in a record amount of Accelerated Reader Words Read wristbands being awarded including a Y9 boy reaching his two million words read target (only the second pupil to achieve this).

In the Autumn term, some Y8`s went to Truro school to join fellow Y8`s in author Joseph Delaney`s workshop. They thoroughly enjoyed it and loved seeing the huge library as well as mixing with the pupils from Truro school.

Our school has formed a Book Club which meets every week to read, discuss and look at books, play games, design projects or sometimes to just chat.

The Book Club attended The Kernow Youth Book Awards at the Eden Project. We were especially pleased when our favorite choice, Car-jacked by Ali Sparkes was voted best book. The pupils had the opportunity to chat to the four authors there, including Ali Sparkes, about writing books.

Another great moment was the surprising find of a set of rare comedy plays books about two penguins, in a box of donated books. Even though they aren`t on A.R. lots of pupils have been enjoying reading them in pairs; they`re so funny and they are good as they were specifically written for two readers of different abilities.

The annual reading test results show huge amounts of improvement, but it`s also apparent how much the pupils are enjoying their reading experiences.
