Residential Provision - Our Vision, Purpose and Approach
Residential Statement of Purpose
Pencalenick School, a proud member of the Special Partnership Trust, provides education and support for pupils aged 11–16 with diverse learning needs. As one of only two schools within the Trust offering residential education, we are uniquely positioned to provide pupils with the opportunity to engage in a vibrant, nurturing residential community. Our residential provision runs Monday to Friday during term time, accommodating up to nine pupils each night. It is an integral part of our wider school offer, enriching learning and personal development through carefully planned residential experiences.
Our Vision
At Pencalenick, our mission is to prepare children for adulthood and a life full of choice and opportunity. Our residential plays a vital role in achieving this vision. It allows pupils to develop independence, confidence, and the personal and social skills necessary to thrive beyond school. Residential life is not simply optional; it is a valued entitlement within our Personal Development and Preparing for Adulthood curriculum. Pupils live, learn, and grow within a caring community where belonging, friendship, and wellbeing are nurtured.
Our Purpose
Through residential experiences, pupils will:
- Develop personal independence and practical life skills that prepare them for adulthood and active participation in their communities.
- Take part in a wide range of activities and shared experiences that build confidence, teamwork, and resilience.
- Learn to form and maintain positive relationships, guided by empathy and respect.
- Experience a sense of belonging and contribution, developing responsibility and pride in themselves and others.
Residential experiences are available to all pupils. Those interested are supported to engage at a pace suited to their individual needs, strengths, and readiness for independence.
Our Approach
Each pupil follows a personalised Skills Plan, co-designed with their key worker, setting achievable goals that celebrate progress toward independence. Progress is regularly reviewed, with key workers meeting pupils to recognise achievements, identify next steps, and set new personal targets. Learning in the residential setting is supported by positive relationships, an atmosphere of exploration, and mutual respect.
The residential department is located within the main school building, with accommodation on the first floor. Pupils live in small, mixed groups, creating a family-style environment that encourages cooperation, shared responsibility, and friendship.
A team of six qualified residential staff provide consistent care, guidance, and support, prioritising pupils’ safety, wellbeing, and development. Staff receive training in safeguarding, health and safety, behaviour support, first aid, and communication to ensure high-quality care and education at all times.
Working Together
Parents and carers are essential partners in shaping the residential experience and supporting their child’s success. Regular communication, feedback, and joint planning ensure that the provision reflects the needs, aspirations, and values of our community. Together, we create a residential experience that prepares every child for adulthood and a life of choice and opportunity.
Regulatory Statement
This Statement of Purpose aligns with the National Minimum Standards for Residential Special Schools (DfE 2022) and reflects Pencalenick School’s curriculum intent and School Improvement Plan. It will be reviewed annually to ensure the residential provision continues to meet pupils’ educational, emotional, and social needs safely and effectively.
