Although we know that Storm Goretti is forecast to pass by midnight tonight, we are also aware that the high winds have already caused significant damage across Cornwall, with many homes and businesses now without power.

We need to make sure that it is safe to open our site tomorrow morning before we bring staff and pupils back in, and delaying opening will give us the opportunity to do this safely, in daylight.

👉 The Pencalenick Calendar 2025

The students recently took part in a workshop about vertical planting, where they explored climbing plants and learnt about how, if you can't plant horizontally, you can always go vertically! They helped to trace and cut out some leaf shapes using waste material donated by SKB sails. 

The leaves were then sewn onto sail shades by local designer Elinor Voisin to be suspended over the pergola outside the science lab on the new building. 

Designer Elinor also made the wonderful new planter that was installed outside the classrooms. The planter will be planted up in September with climbing plants that will grow up and over the pergola. There will also be room for seasonal planting. We look forward to seeing what is chosen! 

The prize draw was open to all schools across the country that completed the full RevivR course, and several classes at Pencalenick School have successfully participated. The program plays a crucial role in equipping people with the confidence and skills needed to react in emergency situations, particularly with techniques such as CPR. With increasing awareness around the importance of first aid, it is especially vital that pupils understand, and are not frightened by, the use of CPR and defibrillators.

“We are delighted to have won this prize,” said Ian Hurley, a teacher at Pencalenick School. “Our pupils have shown incredible enthusiasm for the course, and it’s been fantastic to see how engaged they are with the material. The ability to practice chest compressions at home using the RevivR app and an ordinary pillow has allowed them to build confidence and reinforce what they’ve learned in class. These tablets will be a huge benefit, not only for continuing the RevivR course but also for supporting other areas of learning.”

The school is particularly proud that its participation in the program is helping break down barriers for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), who may be especially nervous about emergency situations. By gaining familiarity with CPR and the resuscitation process, pupils are better prepared to stay calm and act in the face of emergencies, whether for family members or others.
